  • How do I add / download maps to Nokia Maps using the Nokia Map Loader?

The Nokia Map Loader is used to download and transfer the Map data to you connected Nokia device. The map data is only useable by Nokia Maps. Map Loader can be downloaded to your compatible computer from www.nokia.com/maps/download.

Please note that Map Loader cannot be use to install the Maps application to your device.

Before attempting to use the Map Loader application ensure that you have the following:

  • The latest version of Maps installed on your device.
  • A Memory Card/Mass Memory in your device which has been used with the Maps application at least once. This will create the folder structure that Map Loader requires.

Through a USB cable.

  1. After installing the Nokia Map Loader on your PC, start the application by clicking on the shortcut created on your desktop.
  2. The application will open and indicate that it is waiting for device. Connect your device using the USB cable and select PC Suite Mode.
  3. Once your device is connected the application will update and then open.
  4. Click the continent in the tab on the top of the application window to expand it.
  5. Choose the country from the sub listing. Some small countries can be chosen completely, others have several sub-maps from which you can choose various areas to install. To install all the maps in the category click the + to add the maps to the right pane labelled Selection then click the Download button on the bottom right.
  6. You can install as many maps as you want, as long as you have memory space left on your card. If you have selected to install more maps than allowed a warning will appear. Once the maps have been downloaded you may close the loader. The new maps should load once Maps is started on the phone.

Through a card reader - required for the Nokia N70 (or any other Symbian Series 60 2nd Edition mobile device) as it is not possible to transfer map data via USB cable directly to the device.

  1. This will follow the same procedure as above with the exception that instead of connecting the mobile phone via USB cable you need to take the memory card out of your mobile device and insert it into a card reader which will then be connected to your PC. To go by this method, you must run the phone version on Maps software once. This will create the necessary file structure required for the map data.

If you do not have access to Nokia Map Loader, you can download Over the Air, however this requires the phone to have a data (GPRS/3G) connection.

  1. In order to use this method you need to make sure that the Use Network setting for the maps software is set to When Needed.
  2. Start the Maps Software on Phone.
  3. Zoom in (using the * key) to the required area, the connection icon will start blinking to download data.
  4. Wait for the map data to be downloaded.

  • How do I downgrade the Maps application?

We do not recommend downgrading to earlier versions of the Maps application as many of the improvements to both the Maps application and map data will not be available.

If you have Maps 3.03 installed on your device and you wish to download to Maps 3.01, simply uninstall Ovi Maps from the Application Manager on your device.

If you wish to downgrade from other Maps versions there are two ways:

The first method can be used if you wish to return to an earlier version of the application installed on your device. This is done through a soft reset:

  1. Backup you device using Ovi Suite.
  2. Dial *#7370# in to your device. Confirm that you wish to reset the device.
  3. Enter the passcode (by default 12345).
  4. The device will now be reset and the Maps application will have reverted to the original version. You can now reload your backed up data using Ovi Suite.

If the above steps did not leave you with the application version you intended there is an alternative method of downgrading. For this method you must have the .sis installation file for the earlier version. If you have this file:

  1. Navigate to your memory card/mass storage on your device.
  2. Delete the Cities folder and the .qf file.
  3. Install the .sis file on your device using PC Suite application installer to overwrite the newer Maps application version.

Once you have downgraded the application, start the Maps application briefly to recreate the file structures before using Map Loader to transfer the map data to your device.

  • Are there any charges when using GPS?

If you are using Assisted GPS (A-GPS) to find your position there may be a charge as A-GPS involves the transmission of small amounts of data through your service provider’s network. Typically getting the GPS connection with A-GPS requires less than 10kB of data being transferred.

All data transmission costs are paid by the user. Outside your home cellular network, that is, while roaming, the costs may vary. Contact the service provider for information about data transmission costs.

When using normal GPS there are no charges involved, though a GPS fix will take much longer.
